The 283rd Birth Anniversary Celebration of King Gaeboo Achyok of Damsang 20 December 2014.
The 283rd Birth Anniversary of the Lepcha King of Damsang, Pano Gaeboo Achyok was celebrated at Mela Ground, Kalimpong on 20 December 2014.Ten thousand Lepchas from different places of Sikkim, Nepal, Bhutan and elsewhere came to pay their respects to Pano Gaeboo Achyok who gave his life to protect and to give the Lepcha identity to his people.
The Muns and Boongthings, Lepcha priestesses and priests, offered their prayers and ovations to Pano Gaeboo Achyok at his fort, Damsang in the morning. A huge Lepcha cultural function was organised at the Mela Ground, Kalimpong. This year the Lepcha mothers being the true custodians of Lepcha culture came forward and played the main role in the cultural programme.
A book and a magazine were released on the day:
a. Prominent Personalities among the Lepchas by Dr. D.C. Roy.
b. King Gaeboo Achyok Bilingual Lepcha Magazine edited by Ren Ajak Tamsang.
The Bigha Lepcha Night School, Nimbong received the prestigeous “Aathing K.P.Tamsang Lepcha Language and Literary Award 2014” for their outstanding work in promoting the Lepcha language and literature. The award carries a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000-00 (Rupees fifty thousand).
Dr. D.C.Roy and Dr. Tapan Kumar Das were conferred with the Lepcha title “Ren” in acknowledgement of their impressive literary works on the Lepchas for the last twenty five years.
The Mayel Lyang Lepcha Development Board sponsored the programme.
