Thingnyoo Azem Rebecca Namchyomoo Lepcha Folk Song and Dance Competition 11 April 2015.
The “Renyoo Azem Rebecca Namchyomoo Lepcha Folk Song and Dance Competition” is held annually to encourage young Lepcha artists to show their talent and thereby to keep alive the Lepcha culture.
Thingnyoo Azem Rebecca Namchyomoo, besides being a Lepcha leader was also one of the leading personalities of Kalimpong. In the 1950s, she was as the President of Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association, she worked extremely hard to preserve the Lepcha culture. She had close contract with the national leaders like Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, Smt. Indira Gandhi and others. The credit for introducing the Lepcha folk song, dance and music for the first time to the outside world goes to her.
In remembrance and in recognition of her enormous contribution towards the conservation and promotion of Lepcha folk song, dance and music, the event is named after her.
Thingnyoo Azem Rebecca Namchyomoo Lepcha Folk Song and Dance Competition was held at the Town Hall, Kalimpong on 11th April 2016.
The following were declared winners:
i. Folk Dance – 1st (First) : Tasey Ngaso Kyong Shezoon.
– 2nd (Second) : Upper Pochaok Kyong Shezoom.
– 3rd (Third) : Mayel Kyong, Mani Gombu Kyong Shezoom.
ii. Folk Songs – 1st (First) : Sunnglipung Kyong Shezoom.
– 2nd (Second) : Tasey Ngaso Kyong Shezoom.
iii. Nur Pundee Lepcha, Upper Pochaok was declared a budding Lepcha singer.
